What kids do

“Read each sentence. Which picture does it tell about? Write that picture’s letter in the box.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Which picture? Write its letter.
  2. The monkey wants his hat.
  3. There is a unicorn out there!
  4. I think that pizza is for me.
  5. The dog likes to walk with her.

Teacher tip

Ask kids to underline the word that gave them the clue.

How to use it

  • Use it in a literacy center with a partner who checks the reading.
  • Play it again later in the week with a different partner. Repeat play builds speed.
  • Keep a sight word ring of flash cards so kids can check spellings.

Watch for

Kids who read the words in order from memory. Point to words out of order to check.

Talk about it

  • Can you find one of these words in a book from the class library?
  • Which words look alike? How do you tell them apart?

Take it further

Play a quick round of “flash and read” with the words at the end of the day.
