What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Scientists measure liquids in milliliters (mL). Read the number at the top of the water. Each small line is 10 mL.
  2. 1. Write how much water is in each cylinder.
  3. 2. Answer the questions.
  4. Which cylinder has the most water?
  5. How much more water is in C than in A?
  6. If you pour A and B together, how much water is there?

Teacher tip

Teach kids to read the bottom of the curved water line at eye level.

How to use it

  • Pass around each real tool before the sheet.
  • Practice measuring with rulers and cylinders as a class first.
  • Let partners compare answers and settle any differences with a book or a video.

Watch for

Starting a ruler at 1 instead of 0. Show where zero is.

Talk about it

  • Why do scientists wear goggles?
  • Where have you seen this outside of school?

Take it further

Set up a measurement station with a ruler, a balance and a cylinder.
