What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. A balance compares how heavy things are. Put one object in each pan. The heavier side goes down. If the pans stay level, the objects weigh the same.
  2. My guess: which is heavier?
  3. Which was heavier?
  4. Does the bigger thing always weigh more?

Teacher tip

A homemade hanger balance with cups works well.

How to use it

  • Pass around each real tool before the sheet.
  • Practice measuring with rulers and cylinders as a class first.
  • Start with a two-minute “I notice, I wonder” talk about the picture on the sheet.

Watch for

Starting a ruler at 1 instead of 0. Show where zero is.

Talk about it

  • Which tool would you use to find out how heavy something is?
  • How could we find out if that is true?

Take it further

Set up a measurement station with a ruler, a balance and a cylinder.
