What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Pollination is how pollen gets from one flower to another so the flowers can make seeds.
  2. Number the steps from 1 to 5.
  3. Pollen sticks to the bee’s fuzzy body.
  4. The flower can now make seeds.
  5. A bee lands on a flower to drink nectar.
  6. Some pollen rubs off onto the new flower’s pistil.
  7. The bee flies to another flower of the same kind.
  8. Draw a bee visiting a flower. Show the pollen on the bee.

Teacher tip

Use cheese puffs as pollen: kids touch two flowers and see the orange dust move.

How to use it

  • Take apart a real flower with tweezers.
  • Show seeds that fly, stick or float.
  • Start with a two-minute “I notice, I wonder” talk about the picture on the sheet.

Watch for

Plants don’t eat soil. They make food from light, air and water.

Talk about it

  • Why do flowers need bees?
  • What evidence helped you choose your answer?

Take it further

Plant a pollinator garden in a pot by the window.
