What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Do it: soak a dry lima bean in water overnight. Gently peel off the thin skin, then split the bean in half with your fingernail. Look closely with a magnifying glass.
  2. 1. Label the parts of the seed.
  3. 2. Draw your seed up close.
  4. 3. The embryo is a tiny baby plant. What do you think the cotyledon does for it?

Teacher tip

Soak the lima beans overnight so they split open easily.

How to use it

  • Take apart a real flower with tweezers.
  • Show seeds that fly, stick or float.
  • Start with a two-minute “I notice, I wonder” talk about the picture on the sheet.

Watch for

Plants don’t eat soil. They make food from light, air and water.

Talk about it

  • Why do flowers need bees?
  • Where have you seen this outside of school?

Take it further

Plant a pollinator garden in a pot by the window.
