What kids do

“Find each word in the jumble. Every time you find one, color a box above it on the graph. Which word has the most?”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Find the words. Cross off each one as you count it.
  2. Color one box for each word you found
  3. Which word has the most? Which has the fewest?

Teacher tip

Look-alikes make this harder. Ask kids to read each word before they color.

How to use it

  • Use it in a literacy center with a partner who checks the reading.
  • Play it again later in the week with a different partner. Repeat play builds speed.
  • Keep a sight word ring of flash cards so kids can check spellings.

Watch for

Kids who guess from the first letter. Ask them to look at the whole word, all the way to the end.

Talk about it

  • Which word was the hardest to read? Why?
  • Can you find one of these words in a book from the class library?

Take it further

Hide the week’s words around the room and send kids on a word hunt with a clipboard.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
