What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Write each change to Earth’s surface in the right column.
  2. Fast (minutes, hours or days)
  3. Slow (hundreds of years or more)
  4. Draw one fast change and one slow change.

Teacher tip

Compare an earthquake to the Grand Canyon. Both change Earth, at very different speeds.

How to use it

  • Build landforms in a sand tray or from playdough.
  • Pour water over a sand hill to show erosion.
  • Let partners compare answers and settle any differences with a book or a video.

Watch for

Weathering breaks rock; erosion moves it. The words get mixed up.

Talk about it

  • What makes rocks break down?
  • Where have you seen this outside of school?

Take it further

Make a landform map of an imaginary island.
