What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. You need: a bouncy ball, a meter stick taped to a wall and a partner. Do it: drop the ball (do not throw it) from each height. Your partner watches how high it bounces.
  2. What happens to the bounce when you drop the ball from higher up?
  3. The ball never bounces as high as you dropped it. Where does some of the energy go?

Teacher tip

Measure each bounce with a meter stick held against a wall.

How to use it

  • Drop a ball and talk about where its energy goes.
  • List the things in the classroom that use electricity.
  • Let partners compare answers and settle any differences with a book or a video.

Watch for

Energy is never used up. It changes form.

Talk about it

  • How can your family save energy?
  • How could we find out if that is true?

Take it further

Do an energy audit of the classroom and post a turn-it-off reminder.
