What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. How to do it: sit still by a window, a feeder or in a park for 15 minutes. Each time you see a bird, make a tally mark next to its kind. If you do not know its name, write what it looks like.
  2. Kind of bird (or what it looks like)
  3. The bird I saw the most
  4. The bird I saw the least

Teacher tip

Sit still by a window for 15 minutes. Quiet watching is a skill.

How to use it

  • Hang a bird feeder near a window if you can.
  • Show pictures of different beaks and ask what each one eats.
  • Let partners compare answers and settle any differences with a book or a video.

Watch for

Not all birds fly. Penguins and ostriches are birds too.

Talk about it

  • Why do some birds fly south?
  • How could we find out if that is true?

Take it further

Do a class bird count and share it with a citizen science project.
