What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Animals get ready for winter in different ways. Some hibernate: they sleep deeply all winter. Some migrate: they travel somewhere warmer. Some adapt: they stay and change how they live.
  2. Write each animal under what it does in winter.
  3. If you were an animal, would you hibernate, migrate or adapt? Why?

Teacher tip

Show a short clip of a hibernating bear or migrating geese.

How to use it

  • Look out the window and talk about the season right now.
  • Use a globe and a lamp to show Earth’s tilt.
  • Let partners compare answers and settle any differences with a book or a video.

Watch for

Seasons are not caused by Earth being closer to the sun. They come from the tilt.

Talk about it

  • How do animals get ready for winter?
  • How could we find out if that is true?

Take it further

Adopt a tree and photograph it once a season.
