Free Trace & Color Page: Potato Monster Coloring Page from Trace Then Color: Cartoon Food Monsters

If your kids enjoy silly characters, weird creatures, or anything that combines humor with creativity, today’s freebie is going to be a hit. I’m sharing a brand-new Potato Monster Coloring Page straight from my book Trace Then Color: Cartoon Food Monsters. This cartoony potato beast is one of the 50 characters featured in the book, and like everything I draw, it’s entirely hand-drawn by me—no AI, no stock art, just original kid-friendly cartoons designed to spark imagination.

This free Potato Monster Coloring Page gives young artists the chance to trace, color, and bring this goofy food creature to life. The page features a potato-shaped monster with dozens of little potato “eyes,” a pair of stick-like arms and legs, and a funny, slightly confused expression. Kids love characters like this because they’re silly, approachable, and open to creative interpretation.

Before we get into the details of the free page, I want to talk about the book it comes from and why the Trace Then Color series is such a great creative tool for kids.

About the Free Potato Monster Coloring Page

Let’s start with the star of the post—the Potato Monster Coloring Page. This page walks your child through the simple traceable outline of a potato-shaped monster, giving them the opportunity to practice line control, build drawing confidence, and then move on to coloring.

Here’s what they’ll find on the page:

  • A large, easy-to-trace outline perfect for beginners
  • Lots of small “eyes” and surface details to keep kids engaged
  • Stick-like arms and legs that are fun and simple to trace
  • A friendly monster expression that invites creativity
  • Wide open spaces for coloring and shading

Kids can trace the Potato Monster’s outline first, then add color however they like. They might give the monster bright red eyes, rainbow-colored arms, or shading that makes it look like an oven-roasted potato. The goal is to make the Potato Monster Coloring Page fun, flexible, and easy for all ages.

This freebie is a great screen-free activity for rainy afternoons, art time, classroom creativity, or simple at-home practice. And if your kids enjoy this Potato Monster, they’ll love meeting the rest of the food-themed characters waiting in the full book.

Color 50 Food Monsters

About the Book: Trace Then Color: Cartoon Food Monsters

Trace Then Color: Cartoon Food Monsters is packed with 50 original hand-drawn characters, all created by me for young artists who love goofy, imaginative designs. Every monster in the book starts as a simple traceable outline, making it easy for beginners to get started and building artistic confidence one page at a time.

Some of the monsters included:

  • A banana monster
  • A creepy pineapple
  • A slice-of-pizza creature
  • A corn monster
  • A hot dog creature
  • A cupcake beast
  • A strawberry monster
  • And many, many more

Every character blends food themes with monster design, resulting in something funny, unexpected, and incredibly fun for kids to draw. The Potato Monster Coloring Page gives a great sample of the kind of fun they can expect.

Each page follows the same process:

  1. Trace the outline
  2. Add any missing details
  3. Color the character
  4. Add your own personal touches

This step-by-step format encourages kids to experiment, develop their style, and have fun while learning basic drawing techniques.

Why Kids Love the Trace Then Color Method

The Trace Then Color series has become one of my most popular book lines for a good reason—it’s designed to help kids succeed. When a child sits down with a clean outline that they can trace at their own pace, everything becomes less intimidating. Tracing gives them a comfortable starting point, and coloring lets them inject their personality into the character.

Here’s why this method works so well:

  • It removes the fear of drawing “wrong.” Kids start with a clear outline.
  • It improves hand-eye coordination. Great for developing motor skills.
  • It builds confidence quickly. Kids see immediate results.
  • It encourages creativity. Especially when characters are as silly as food monsters.
  • It works for ages 3 and up. Even the youngest budding artists can trace and color the shapes.

A Potato Monster Coloring Page may look simple to adults, but to a child, it’s an invitation to imagine, discover, and create.

How the Potato Monster Coloring Page Fits Into the Series

This free Potato Monster Coloring Page is just one small peek into a much larger universe of kid-friendly art books. I’ve now created over 80 books across four major series:

  • How to Draw
  • Trace Then Color
  • Draw by Grid
  • Shape Drawing Challenge

Each series offers a different method of teaching drawing, and the Trace Then Color books are specifically crafted for younger artists who benefit from structured outlines.

Some popular themes across the Trace Then Color line include:

  • Cute cartoon Animals
  • Baby Animals
  • Unicorn Animals
  • Cartoon Robots
  • Cartoon Dinosaurs
  • Mermaids and Unicorns
  • Weird Creatures
  • Cartoon Aliens
  • Mutant Animals
  • Crusty Goobers

  • Food Monsters (the book featured today!)

If your child enjoys tracing this Potato Monster Coloring Page, they’ll find dozens of similar designs across these other titles.

Every Character Is Hand-Drawn

One thing parents appreciate—and something I’m proud to emphasize—is that every character in every book is:

  • Hand-drawn
  • Kid-friendly
  • Original
  • Created without AI or automated tools

I sketch each character, develop its personality, and refine it with kids in mind. When your child works on the Potato Monster Coloring Page, they’re interacting with artwork created specifically to help them learn, smile, and stay inspired.

Why Food Monsters Are So Engaging for Kids

Food-themed creatures just hit differently. They’re funny, unexpected, and instantly recognizable. A potato with stick legs and a goofy expression is both bizarre and charming—kids immediately want to bring it to life.

A few reasons the Food Monsters theme works so well:

  • Kids connect with familiar foods
  • Monsters give room for expressive features
  • The designs are playful and non-intimidating
  • There are endless color possibilities
  • Every page sparks storytelling

Kids often name their monsters, imagine what they like to eat (even though they are food), and build whole personalities around them. The Potato Monster Coloring Page is perfect for kicking off that creative thinking.

Meet The Author & Artist

Kevin Coulston is a children’s book author, illustrator, cartoonist, and member of the National Cartoonists Society. Over the course of his career, he has published more than 100 books, including instructional drawing books, activity books, comics, graphic novels, and children’s picture books.

His popular How to Draw, Trace Then Color, and Draw by Grid series have helped thousands of aspiring young artists learn to draw through simple, approachable lessons featuring hundreds of Kevin’s original cartoon characters.

Kevin is also the creator of the comic series Dylan McVillain and The Adventures of a 4th Grade Space Captain, as well as the children’s picture book series Alexis and the T-Rexes. In addition to his publishing work, Kevin created, wrote, illustrated, and animated the web series Bad Jokes with Ugly Folks, starring legendary voice actors Rob Paulsen and Tara Strong.

Kevin believes anyone can learn to draw—and that learning is a lot more fun when the characters you’re drawing are weird, silly, and just a little ridiculous.

What Our Customers Are Saying

“The author really does a great job demonstrating how easy (and rewarding!) it can be to draw seemingly ordinary things you (and your little ones!) may feel too intimidated to try drawing without the step-by-step guide! Putting already-known shapes together and making something new and original is a fantastic way to learn! And recognizing that you can add your own twists and personality to your drawings makes all the difference. I think it’s a fun, original approach to building confidence for a lifelong hobby. I have the ebook copy, and can only imagine how great a physical copy would be!”

– Daenarah [Amazon Review]

“There are several of these fun books by this author. My kids and I have had a lot of fun with these. It’s a great activity to do as a family and see how they all turn out. Almost like a sip and paint but more of a juice box and draw.”

– Allison B. [Amazon Review]

My kids can’t wait to start drawing these monsters in their illustrations! The many different moods of the monsters appeal to their different personalities. We love the many options, styles, and opportunities to expand upon the characters. Recommended for all ages!

– Kasey [Amazon Review]

“Kevin has put out many books on drawing and animation, and has such a great feel for HOW to explain the process. His art is so expressive and kid-friendly, but his real strength is in his ability to really explain and show how it’s done, making it accessible to kids and adults. I’m a firm believer that not everyone who “can do” can teach, but Kevin does both beautifully! Pick this up and watch kids have a blast making robots of all sorts, while learning great fundamental art skills at the same time!”

– Tom R. [Amazon Review]

“My 5yo LOVES this book! The drawings are cute and the instructions are easy to follow along with. She gets a kick out of drawing muffin monsters and ketchup monsters and it actually keeps her pretty focused for long periods of time.”

– Monica [Amazon Review]

“This is a fantastic book for kids who love art, cartoons, comic books, or just having fun! There are a lot of characters to choose from, and really easy step-by-step instructions to follow. You child will have a blast drawing these fun, silly characters! And just in time for Easter baskets!”

– Bestmomever [Amazon Review]

“This is a very good book for kids that want to learn to draw, my sons love it and Kevin does a great job of making drawing fun and not intimidating. Highly recommended for the long summer hours!”

– David D. [Amazon Review]
