About the Book: How to Draw: Spooky Stuff for Halloween

This Jack-o’-Lantern is just one of 50 characters included in my book How to Draw: Spooky Stuff for Halloween. This fun and beginner-friendly drawing book is all about teaching kids how to draw classic Halloween characters using simple, step-by-step instructions.

Inside, kids will learn how to draw a Jack-o’-Lantern, Skeletons, Witches, Vampires, Werewolves, Ghosts, Zombies, Trick-or-Treaters, Mummies, Candy Monsters, and more. Each drawing is broken down into six easy steps so that kids can see their progress and build confidence as they go.

The goal of the How to Draw series is to make drawing approachable and fun for kids of all ages. Every page in How to Draw: Spooky Stuff for Halloween was drawn by hand by me, Kevin Coulston. I sketch each character from scratch, refine it through multiple drafts, and then carefully turn it into an easy-to-follow lesson designed just for kids.

When kids learn how to draw a Jack-o’-Lantern from this book, they’re learning more than just how to make a fun Halloween doodle—they’re learning the fundamentals of character design, shape recognition, and creative storytelling through art.

Also Available in Trace and Grid Editions

Like all books in my Halloween-themed series, Spooky Stuff for Halloween is also available in two additional formats, so kids can choose the style that suits them best:

  • Trace Then Color: Spooky Stuff for Halloween – Perfect for younger children who are just starting to draw. Kids can trace the same cute Halloween characters from the How to Draw version, then color them in. Tracing helps build hand coordination and confidence while still being a ton of fun.
  • Draw by Grid: Spooky Stuff for Halloween – Great for slightly older kids who like a little challenge. The grid method helps them learn how to break down complex drawings into smaller, manageable sections. It’s an excellent way to build drawing accuracy while still having fun with Halloween art.

All three formats feature the same charming Jack-o’-Lantern character, along with dozens of other spooky friends. So no matter which edition your child chooses, they’ll get to learn how to draw a Jack-o’-Lantern and more in their favorite way.

Why Drawing Jack-o’-Lanterns Is So Much Fun

Few things say “Halloween” like a Jack-o’-Lantern. Whether it’s carved out of a pumpkin or drawn on paper, it’s one of the most recognizable symbols of the season. Kids love drawing Jack-o’-Lanterns because they can give each one a unique personality—happy, scary, silly, or even sleepy!

When kids learn how to draw a Jack-o’-Lantern, they also learn about expression and imagination. A simple change in the eyes or mouth can completely change the character’s mood. That’s part of what makes drawing Halloween art so exciting—every creation feels personal and one-of-a-kind.

In my books, I like to keep spooky characters fun and friendly, so even the Jack-o’-Lanterns have a touch of cuteness to them. The one featured in this tutorial has rounded features, a big grin, and that perfect balance of “spooky but sweet.” It’s a character that’s approachable for beginners but still engaging for more experienced young artists.

Learning how to draw a Jack-o’-Lantern also gives kids a chance to celebrate Halloween in a creative way—without the mess of carving real pumpkins! They can make as many as they want, decorate their drawings, and even turn them into homemade Halloween cards or decorations.

About the Book: How to Draw: Spooky Stuff for Halloween

This cute little bat is one of 50 original Halloween-themed drawings from my latest release, How to Draw: Spooky Stuff for Halloween. The book is filled with easy step-by-step lessons that teach kids how to draw Skeletons, Witches, Jack-o’-Lanterns, Trick-or-Treaters, Werewolves, Candy Monsters, Mummies, Zombies, and of course—Vampire Bats!

Each page shows the drawing process broken down into six simple steps, so kids can follow along easily and see their drawings come together piece by piece. The goal is to help kids learn how to draw using a method that feels approachable, fun, and creative.

When your child learns how to draw a Vampire Bat using the steps in the book, they’re not just copying lines—they’re learning the process of building characters from simple shapes. It’s the same technique I use when designing all the characters in my books.

All the art in How to Draw: Spooky Stuff for Halloween is hand-drawn by me, from the first sketch to the final line. I want every page to feel like a creative conversation between the artist and the student—simple enough to follow, but inspiring enough to make kids want to keep drawing long after they’ve finished.

Also Available in Trace and Grid Editions

If your child enjoys tracing or using a grid system to draw, this spooky Halloween theme is also available in two additional editions:

  • Trace Then Color: Spooky Stuff for Halloween – Perfect for younger artists who are still developing their fine motor skills. Kids can trace over the same cute Halloween characters from the How to Draw version, then color them in for extra fun.
  • Draw by Grid: Spooky Stuff for Halloween – Designed for older kids who enjoy a little more structure. The grid method helps them focus on proportion and placement, making it a great way to improve their skills while keeping the art experience enjoyable.

Both editions feature the same fun characters—including the Vampire Bat—and offer different ways to approach drawing, depending on age and ability. No matter which version they use, kids can still learn how to draw a Vampire Bat in a way that feels comfortable and rewarding.

Why Kids Love Drawing Bats

Bats are one of the most iconic Halloween creatures—but they’re also one of the most fun to draw! They have interesting shapes, wide wings, and playful expressions that make them perfect for cartoon-style art.

When kids learn how to draw a Vampire Bat, they get to explore creativity without fear of making mistakes. Maybe their bat ends up with huge fangs, or maybe it looks more like a tiny, chubby trick-or-treater with wings. That’s part of the fun—every drawing becomes unique.

In my books, I always focus on making spooky characters feel friendly and inviting rather than scary. The Vampire Bat is a perfect example—it has big round eyes, a silly grin, and just a hint of Halloween mischief. Kids can personalize it however they want, adding fun accessories or different facial expressions.

That’s one of the best parts of learning how to draw a Vampire Bat—there’s no wrong way to do it.

Why Kids Love Drawing Monsters

There’s something special about monsters—especially ones that are cute or funny rather than scary. Drawing monsters lets kids stretch their imagination and play with ideas that don’t have to be realistic. When they learn how to draw a Candy Corn Monster, they’re not just recreating something—they’re inventing their own little world.

I often hear from parents that their kids start coming up with their own monsters after completing one or two drawings from my books. Maybe their Candy Corn Monster gets a friend, or maybe they invent a new Halloween creature entirely! That’s the best part about making art—it sparks imagination.

The How to Draw: Spooky Stuff for Halloween book is full of opportunities like that. Each lesson gives kids a foundation they can build on, so they can keep creating long after they’ve finished a single page.

And because every page follows a six-step process, kids can see exactly how each drawing takes shape. This makes it easy for them to follow along and feel proud of what they’ve made.

Available in Trace and Grid Versions Too

If your child prefers tracing or using grids to build their drawings, this Halloween theme is also available in two other formats:

  • Trace Then Color: Spooky Stuff for Halloween – This version is perfect for younger kids who are still building their motor skills. It includes the same characters from the How to Draw book but formatted as tracing and coloring pages.
  • Draw by Grid: Spooky Stuff for Halloween – This version is great for older kids who want to improve their accuracy and proportions. The grid method helps them focus on details while still being creative and having fun.

These alternate versions make the Halloween theme accessible to artists of all ages and skill levels. Whether they trace, grid, or draw step-by-step, every child can enjoy the fun of learning how to draw a Candy Corn Monster and many other spooky, silly characters.

How to Draw: Spooky Stuff for Halloween is part of my ever-growing Art Books for Kids series, which now includes more than 80 titles. Each book in the series focuses on a fun theme—everything from unicorns and fairies to dinosaurs, robots, cute monsters, animals, and more.

About the Book: How to Draw: Spooky Stuff for Halloween

My new Halloween Drawing Book features all kinds of classic Halloween characters—Skeletons, Jack-o’-Lanterns, Trick-or-Treaters, Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, Zombies, Candy Monsters, Ghosts, Mummies, and more! Each drawing is broken down into six simple steps that guide young artists through the process from start to finish.

The characters in this book are designed to be kid-friendly, full of personality, and fun to draw. Nothing too scary—just enough spooky charm to get kids excited about drawing! Whether they’re sketching a goofy werewolf, a cheerful ghost, or a mischievous witch, each page offers a new creative challenge and a chance to learn real drawing skills.

Every lesson follows the same easy-to-understand format as my other How to Draw books. Kids start with simple shapes and slowly add details until their drawings come to life. The step-by-step approach builds confidence, teaches proportions, and helps children see that anyone can draw when they take it one step at a time.

How to Draw: Spooky Stuff for Halloween

If you’ve been searching for a Halloween Drawing Book that’s both educational and tons of fun, this one fits the bill perfectly.

Hand-Drawn Art — No AI, Just Original Characters

As with all of my books, every single page in How to Draw: Spooky Stuff for Halloween is hand-drawn by me, Kevin Coulston. I don’t use AI or clip art—every character starts as a pencil sketch on paper. My goal is always to create something authentic, imaginative, and designed to help kids actually learn to draw.

Each line, expression, and design comes from the same creative process I’ve used for years in my Art Books for Kids series. I want kids to see the artist’s touch behind every example, because learning to draw from real, hand-drawn art helps them connect better with the creative process.

This book has been a lot of fun to create. Halloween characters give me so much room to experiment with expressions, costumes, and funny details—like a vampire who can’t decide whether to be scary or silly, or a zombie who’s more clumsy than creepy. Every character has personality, and that makes them especially fun for kids to draw.

Learn to Draw

More Than Just Drawing — Creative Halloween Fun

This Halloween Drawing Book isn’t just about lines and shapes—it’s about imagination. Once kids complete a few of the characters, they often start coming up with their own! They might design new monsters, mix and match costumes, or create their own Halloween stories inspired by what they’ve drawn.

I’ve always loved seeing how a simple drawing lesson can spark creativity. That’s one of the reasons I make these books—to give kids tools to express themselves. Art is such a healthy, positive alternative to screen time, and I’m happy to know so many families use these books as a way to relax and create together.

With 50 unique Halloween-themed lessons, this book is a great activity for classrooms, art clubs, or family time during October—or really, any time of year if your kids love monsters and spooky fun.

Step-by-Step Drawing Pages for Halloween

Available in Trace and Grid Formats

For younger artists or those who like different styles of learning, this Halloween theme also comes in two additional versions:

  • Trace Then Color: Spooky Stuff for Halloween – Great for younger kids who love tracing and coloring. It features the same characters from the How to Draw edition but formatted for tracing practice and creative coloring fun.
  • Draw by Grid: Spooky Stuff for Halloween – Perfect for older kids or those who enjoy a challenge. This version helps artists focus on proportion and observation skills while still being fun and spooky.

Each format offers something unique, but they all share the same characters, hand-drawn art, and kid-friendly energy. Whether your child likes to trace, follow grids, or draw step by step, there’s a version that fits their level and style.

These variations make the theme accessible for all ages and skill levels—so every child can enjoy the fun of drawing Halloween characters their way.

Part of the 80+ Book Art Books for Kids Series

With this release, there are now over 80 books in my Art Books for Kids series, which includes How to Draw, Trace Then Color, and Draw by Grid titles covering dozens of fun themes.

From unicorns and mermaids to robots, dinosaurs, cute monsters, animals, and more—there’s a book for every young artist’s interests. Each one is designed to make learning to draw easy, engaging, and rewarding.

Drawing Books for Kids

The How to Draw series teaches real drawing skills in a fun, step-by-step format. The Trace Then Color books help beginners develop control and confidence through tracing practice. The Draw by Grid books add a new dimension, teaching observation and proportion through structured grid drawing.

Together, these books make up a creative library that kids can grow with—starting with tracing and eventually moving up to freehand drawing.

If your child loves art, collecting these books is like having a full art course built for kids, all taught through fun, themed characters.

A Halloween Drawing Book for Every Young Artist

If your kids love Halloween, monsters, and getting creative, How to Draw: Spooky Stuff for Halloween is the perfect way to celebrate the season. It’s full of charm, packed with original art, and designed to inspire confidence in every young artist who picks up a pencil.

This Halloween Drawing Book makes a great classroom activity, a fun family art project, or a creative gift for any child who loves to draw. Whether it’s October or any other month, these spooky characters are sure to bring smiles, laughter, and creativity to your child’s art time.

Two New Halloween Activity Books for Kids

I’m really excited to share not just one, but two brand new releases in my Art Books for Kids series—just in time for the spooky season! I’ve created Trace Then Color: Spooky Stuff for Halloween and Draw by Grid: Spooky Stuff for Halloween. Both books are packed full of Halloween characters, creatures, and silly monsters, and they make perfect Halloween Activity Books for Kids who love to draw, color, and create.

Trace Then Color: Spooky Stuff for Halloween

The first new release is Trace Then Color: Spooky Stuff for Halloween, which was designed for kids who enjoy tracing as a way to build confidence in their drawing skills. Tracing is a simple but powerful activity because it helps children improve their hand-eye coordination, practice control, and learn shapes step by step. Once they trace the characters, they can bring them to life with color.

This book includes a wide range of Halloween favorites, such as:

  • Witches flying with pointy hats
  • Goofy zombies stumbling along
  • Classic vampires with big capes
  • Werewolves ready to howl
  • Trick-or-treaters in silly costumes
  • Candy monsters, ghosts, and goblins
  • Skeletons, jack-o’-lanterns, and mummies

Get The Book!

Every page is hand-drawn by me, Kevin Coulston, with no AI art or computer-generated shortcuts. I wanted this to feel like a collection of imaginative characters that kids could truly connect with, and that’s why each drawing has my own style built in. For kids who might feel nervous about drawing on their own, tracing makes the process fun, easy, and rewarding.

Draw by Grid: Spooky Stuff for Halloween

The second new book is Draw by Grid: Spooky Stuff for Halloween, which uses the time-tested grid method to help kids learn how to draw. By breaking a drawing into squares, children only have to focus on one small section at a time. This makes the process feel less intimidating and more achievable.

Inside, kids will find the same spooky cast of characters as in the tracing book—witches, vampires, mummies, trick-or-treaters, candy monsters, skeletons, ghosts, goblins, and more—but in a grid format that guides them through building the drawing square by square.

Get The Book!

This method is fantastic for teaching observation, patience, and proportion, and it’s a great next step for kids who want a little more challenge than tracing. They can also color in their finished drawings, doubling the fun.

Why These Books Are Great Halloween Activity Books for Kids

Both of these new titles were made with the Halloween season in mind, but they’re also designed to be timeless fun. When people search for Halloween Activity Books for Kids, they’re usually looking for something that’s both entertaining and enriching. That’s exactly what these books deliver.

Halloween Art Books for Kids

Here are a few reasons why these titles stand out as some of the best Halloween Activity Books for Kids:

  • Creative and hands-on: Kids aren’t just coloring—they’re actively learning how to draw.
  • Screen-free fun: Perfect for parents who want an alternative to tablets or TV.
  • Skill building: Tracing and grid drawing both develop fine motor skills and artistic confidence.
  • Spooky but fun: The characters are playful and cartoon-like, never too scary for young artists.

Whether your child is brand new to drawing or has been sketching for a while, they’ll find activities here that match their skill level. Tracing provides the perfect entry point, and grid drawing adds a fun challenge for older or more adventurous kids.

How These Fit Into My Art Books for Kids Series

These new Halloween releases join my growing Art Books for Kids series, which now includes more than 75 titles. Over the years, I’ve created drawing books on themes like unicorns, mermaids, fairies, robots, dinosaurs, animals, food monsters, aliens, and so much more. Each book is designed to give kids a fun and approachable way to practice drawing, coloring, and creative thinking.

Many of my books come in multiple formats—How to Draw, Trace Then Color, and Draw by Grid—so that kids can choose the style that works best for them. Some children love step-by-step guides, others prefer tracing, and some enjoy the challenge of the grid method. Having all of these options means there’s something for everyone.

By adding Halloween-themed books to the collection, I wanted to give families seasonal options that feel festive but still fit right into the larger series.

A Seasonal Treat Without the Sugar

Halloween is often thought of in terms of candy, costumes, and pumpkins—but for kids who love to be creative, these new books offer a treat of a different kind. They make great gifts, party activities, or just something fun to do on a cool October afternoon. Parents and teachers looking for Halloween Activity Books for Kids will appreciate how these books keep children engaged in something that’s both fun and beneficial for their development.

Plus, once the season is over, these books don’t lose their charm. Kids can continue to draw zombies, vampires, goblins, and other creatures all year long.

Learn to Draw 50 Halloween Characters

Final Thoughts

Releasing Trace Then Color: Spooky Stuff for Halloween and Draw by Grid: Spooky Stuff for Halloween has been a blast, and I can’t wait for kids everywhere to start using them. They combine everything I love about making art books—hand-drawn characters, approachable activities, and a focus on creativity—while celebrating one of the most playful holidays of the year.

If you’re searching for fun, creative, and screen-free Halloween Activity Books for Kids, these new releases are a perfect choice. Whether your child prefers tracing or grid drawing, both books provide hours of entertainment and learning. And best of all, they’re part of a much larger series, so the drawing fun doesn’t stop when Halloween ends.
