About the Book: How to Draw—Mermaids, Unicorns, and Other Cute Stuff

This unicorn is one of 50 characters included in How to Draw: Mermaids, Unicorns, and Other Cute Stuff, a drawing book that’s packed with magical creatures and charming designs. If your child loves fantasy and all things sparkly and cute, this is one of my most popular books for a reason.

The “How to Draw” series is all about breaking things down step by step. Every character in the book is shown in six clear drawing steps. Your child just follows along and adds a little bit at a time until the full picture comes together.

Besides unicorns, the book includes a wide variety of characters to draw, like:

  • Mermaids
  • Cute animals
  • Smiling Food
  • Happy Desserts
  • Cheerful Flowers
…and tons more “other cute stuff.”

It’s perfect for creative kids who love making up their own stories, drawing their favorite characters, or filling their sketchbooks with fun doodles.

Why Unicorns Are Always a Favorite

There’s a reason kids always want to learn how to draw a unicorn. Unicorns combine everything kids love—magic, color, animals, and fantasy. They’re the ultimate cute creature, and they leave a lot of room for creativity. Want a rainbow mane? Go for it. Golden hooves? Sure. Wings, sparkles, stars, hearts? Add them all.

In the video tutorial, the unicorn has a soft, friendly face and a pastel purple mane and tail. It’s an easy design that’s fun to draw but still full of personality. Even kids who are just getting into drawing will be able to follow along with each step.

What I love most about unicorns is how much personality kids bring to them. They’ll often add their own flair to the horn, eyes, colors, or background. That’s exactly what these tutorials and books are designed for: sparking creativity while building confidence.

About the “How to Draw” Series

How to Draw: Mermaids, Unicorns, and Other Cute Stuff is part of a much bigger collection of drawing books I’ve created over the years. The whole series is designed for kids, especially those who want to learn to draw but don’t know where to start.

Each book features 50 original characters, all drawn in six simple steps. They’re all hand-drawn by me, and every design is created with young artists in mind. That means big shapes, friendly faces, and designs that kids want to draw.

Other books in the series include cartoon monsters, animals, food with faces, and more. They’re all structured the same way so kids can follow along at their own pace and feel successful at every step.

But this one—Mermaids, Unicorns, and Other Cute Stuff—is definitely one of the most magical in the bunch.

Why This Book Is a Hit with Creative Kids

Here are a few reasons why kids (and parents) love this book:

  • Themed Variety: From mermaids and unicorns to smiling cupcakes and potted plants, the variety keeps kids coming back for more.
  • Easy-to-Follow Steps: Each drawing only takes 6 steps, and the layout is simple and clutter-free.
  • Encourages Imagination: Once kids learn how to draw a unicorn, they start thinking about where that unicorn lives, what friends it has, and what happens next.
  • Screen-Free Fun: It’s a quiet, focused activity that gives kids a break from screens while still feeling engaging.
  • Confidence Boosting: Even beginners feel accomplished when they complete a drawing on their own.

Ready to Learn How to Draw A Unicorn?

If your child has ever asked you how to draw a unicorn, this tutorial and book are a perfect pair. The video gives them a chance to follow along in real time, and the book is there for when they’re ready to keep going.

Drawing isn’t just about making something look “good”—it’s about trying something new, making it your own, and having fun in the process. This unicorn (with her purple mane and tail) is just the start. Once your kids learn how to draw one unicorn, they’ll be eager to fill their pages with all kinds of magical creatures.

So sharpen those pencils and get ready—this is going to be a fun one!

About the Book

Draw by Grid: Baby Animals is part of my Draw by Grid series—books designed to help kids grow their drawing confidence while having fun. This one features 50 different baby animal characters, all hand-drawn by me, and all designed to be irresistibly cute. We’re talking everything from a baby penguin and baby elephant to a little piglet, a fuzzy panda, and a floppy-eared bunny. Each animal has big eyes, simple shapes, and playful personality—perfect for artists ages 4 and up.

The grid method allows kids to slow down and focus on what they’re drawing. It breaks down complex images into manageable pieces, helping artists see proportion, placement, and shape more clearly. Even kids who get frustrated with drawing will find this method relaxing and rewarding.

And yes, every single animal in the book is a baby. That means extra cuteness, tiny paws, chubby cheeks, and expressions that make you want to say “awww” every time you flip the page.

Why I Chose Baby Animals

When I started sketching ideas for this book, I knew I wanted to create something that felt warm, joyful, and gentle. Baby animals were the obvious choice. Kids are naturally drawn to them—whether it’s a sleepy kitten, a clumsy puppy, or a curious baby fox, there’s just something about little animals that sparks the imagination.

What I love most about having kids draw baby animals is how quickly it pulls them in. These characters aren’t just fun to draw—they’re fun to think about, talk about, and even name. I’ve watched young artists come up with full backstories for these little guys while working through a page. That kind of creative play is exactly what these books are all about.

How the Draw by Grid Method Works

If you’re new to the Draw by Grid series, here’s how it works:

Each page features a completed drawing on one side and an empty grid on the other. Kids copy the drawing square by square, using the grid to guide their lines and shapes. It’s a process that encourages focus and observation, and it’s a great tool for teaching proportion and spacing.

The grid layout simplifies the drawing process, especially for beginners. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by a full picture, kids only need to think about one small section at a time. That makes it easier to get things “right”—and even more rewarding when they see the finished result.

When I say you can learn to draw baby animals, I mean it. Even if your child has never picked up a pencil to draw something beyond a stick figure, this book will help them feel like a real artist.

What’s Inside

Here’s a peek at some of the baby animals included in the book:

  • Baby Bunny
  • Baby Dolphin
  • Baby Elephant
  • Baby Tiger Cub
  • Baby Rhino
  • Baby Flamingo
  • Baby Cow
  • Baby Panda
  • Baby Bear
  • Baby Giraffe
  • Baby Piglet
  • Baby Turtle
  • Baby Snake
  • Baby Hippo
    …and plenty more!

Each character has been carefully designed to keep the drawing process accessible while still offering a satisfying, expressive result. The goal is always the same: help your child feel successful and excited to keep drawing.

Why Kids Love to Draw Baby Animals

There’s something comforting about baby animals. They’re small, cute, and full of personality. That makes them perfect subjects for beginner artists. Kids love adding little details like whiskers, chubby cheeks, or floppy ears, and they feel a real sense of ownership when they finish a full drawing.

More importantly, these characters become more than just practice—they turn into favorites. When kids draw baby animals, they’re not just learning how to sketch a figure—they’re creating a character they might give a name to, color in, and even write a story about later.

And let’s face it, kids enjoy seeing their work come to life. Drawing baby animals is one of those activities that feels like play but teaches important creative skills at the same time.

A Great Addition to Any Drawing Routine

If you already have a few books from my Draw by Grid series, Baby Animals fits right in. And if this is your first one, it’s a great place to start. The characters are simple and appealing, the steps are clear, and the grid format builds confidence as your child works through each page.

Whether you use it as a daily art break, part of your homeschool curriculum, or just a weekend activity, this book is designed to keep kids engaged while helping them develop their artistic abilities. Learning to draw baby animals is a skill that’s easy to pick up—and one they’ll enjoy returning to again and again.

Final Thoughts

Draw by Grid: Baby Animals is more than just a drawing book—it’s a creative experience built around joy, focus, and adorable baby creatures. If your child lights up at the sight of animals, loves to draw, or just wants to build their art skills in a fun and approachable way, this book is made for them.

You can use the grid pages straight from the book, color in your finished drawings, and even add your own backgrounds or details once you’re done. Every page is a little invitation to get creative.

So grab a pencil, find a quiet spot, and start drawing. I promise, once your kids draw their first baby animal, they won’t want to stop.

About the Book: How to Draw: Mermaids, Unicorns, and Other Cute Stuff

This book is one of my most popular drawing books, especially with kids who love characters that are bright, whimsical, and full of charm. Every page features an original character designed and drawn by me—Kevin Coulston—and each one is broken down into six easy-to-follow drawing steps.

Inside the book, you’ll find:

  • Mermaids in all kinds of poses and expressions
  • Smiling unicorns with candy-colored manes
  • Food characters like a cupcake, a slice of pizza, or a happy watermelon
  • And yes—even things like a happy cactus

The book is designed for kids ages 5 and up, but I’ve had plenty of younger and older artists enjoy it too. The format is simple, approachable, and fun. And best of all? The drawings actually teach you something. Your kids will walk away knowing how to draw a cute cactus, an adorable honey bee, or a pretty unicorn—without ever feeling stuck or overwhelmed.

Featured Freebie: Cute Cactus Drawing Page

Today’s freebie page walks you through how to draw a cute cactus in just six steps. The cactus sits upright with little stubby arms, a face full of joy, and spikes that give it just enough texture without making it look scary.

Here’s what I love about this one:

  • The character is simple, but still full of life
  • Kids can easily customize it by adding a pot, flowers, or sunglasses
  • It teaches basic shape-building and repetition (great practice!)
  • And it’s just plain fun to draw

Like every page in the book, this one starts with basic shapes. Step-by-step, kids will add detail and personality until they’ve drawn the full character on their own. It’s satisfying, confidence-building, and the kind of activity that makes drawing feel like a success—not a struggle.

Why I Include Characters Like This

I know the title of the book promises mermaids and unicorns—and don’t worry, you’ll get plenty of those—but I always try to sprinkle in a few unexpected characters that still fit the “cute stuff” category. Drawing a cactus gives kids something fresh to try. It’s not covered in sparkles or wings, but it has its own charm—and it opens the door to even more creativity.

Sometimes the best characters are the ones that surprise you. A smiling cactus is funny, unusual, and gives kids a chance to stretch their imagination. That’s one of the biggest reasons I wanted to give away the cactus page today. Once kids know how to draw a cute cactus, it’s only a matter of time before they start designing their own spiky plant buddies.

Learn More

All Characters Are Hand-Drawn

Every character in this book—and in every drawing book I create—is hand-drawn by me. I don’t use clipart or software shortcuts. I design each character from the ground up, focusing on what kids will enjoy drawing and what they’ll be proud to complete.

When I create a book like How to Draw: Mermaids, Unicorns, and Other Cute Stuff, I’m thinking about how each character can build drawing confidence. That’s why I start with simple forms and work toward complete, polished characters. Every step is intentional. Every line has a purpose.

Even the cactus.

Why This Drawing Style Works

The six-step format I use across all my books is something I’ve refined over dozens of titles and thousands of characters. It’s effective because it focuses on learning through doing—by breaking down a drawing into small, manageable steps, kids are able to see their progress unfold right in front of them.

It’s not just about copying shapes—it’s about understanding how drawings are built. The cute cactus you’re learning today might just seem like a fun character, but it also teaches proportion, symmetry, expression, and texture. That’s a lot packed into one spiky little plant.

And once your kid has figured out how to draw a cute cactus, they’ll start applying that confidence to other characters in the book—and even to ones they invent on their own.

More Than Just Mermaids and Unicorns

Yes, the book has mermaids. Yes, it has unicorns. But it also has the kind of characters that kids don’t expect—and that’s part of the fun. A big part of my job as a cartoonist and art book creator is to keep kids curious and engaged. That means offering more than just the obvious.

Whether it’s a smiling slice of watermelon, a giggly animal, or a cheerful cactus covered in needles, each character adds something unique to the drawing journey. It’s not just about learning to draw—it’s about building an artistic vocabulary.

This book is a great fit for kids who like all things cute, colorful, and a little bit quirky. And if your young artist is the kind of kid who puts faces on their fruit or imagines their houseplants talking back, they’re going to love it here.

Get Started

Final Thoughts

Drawing should be fun. That’s always been my approach. I design every book to make the process feel playful and creative—and to give kids a sense of accomplishment on every page.

The cactus page I’m sharing today is a great place to start. It’s simple, it’s silly, and it shows exactly what makes this book so special. When a kid can sit down and learn how to draw a cute cactus in just a few minutes, that’s a big win. And that’s what I aim for in every book I make.

So go ahead—download the page, grab some pencils, and get drawing. The cactus is waiting.

How to Draw A Fairy – A Magical Step-by-Step Freebie From the Book

If your kid has ever dreamed of drawing their very own fairy, this post is for you. I’ve put together a free page straight out of my book How to Draw: Fairies, Princesses, and Other Cute Stuff that teaches how to draw a fairy in six simple steps. It’s a perfect way to dip into the world of fantasy drawing—no previous experience required.

That means every fairy, princess, cupcake, and rainbow unicorn has been carefully illustrated with young artists in mind. I don’t use AI, clipart, or stock imagery—just pencils, pens, and a whole lot of imagination.

Let’s dive into what makes this book—and especially today’s free fairy page—such a magical way to learn how to draw a fairy.

Book Details

A Step-by-Step Guide That Actually Works

I’ve designed the “How to Draw” series with a super simple system: six steps per character. It’s enough to show clear progression, without overwhelming new artists with too much detail at once. The idea is to build confidence, one step at a time.

When you follow the steps to how to draw a fairy in this book, you’ll start with basic shapes: a head, a body, wings. From there, each step adds a bit more detail—facial features, arms and legs, a flowy dress, and finally the cute finishing touches like sparkles or stars.

In just six steps, kids go from blank page to full-page character. And more importantly, they get it. That’s the whole point—creating something they can be proud of while learning how to draw a fairy the fun way.

The Fairies in This Book Are Adorably Magical

When I was working on the fairies, princesses, and other cute characters for this book, I really wanted to pack each one with personality. Some are floating with sparkly wands, some are dancing, and some are mid-flight. There are fairy friends, fairy pets, and even a few that feel like they’re right out of a bedtime story.

The free page you get in this post features one of my favorites. She’s sweet and simple, perfect for beginners. She’s got big expressive eyes, a gentle smile, and wings that are easy to draw but still look magical when complete.

The idea behind How to Draw A Fairy in this style is to keep it fun and approachable. I’m not going for high fantasy detail here—I’m going for charm. And every kid I’ve talked to who’s used this book has picked the fairies as one of the most fun sections to draw from.

Get Started

What Else Is In the Book?

This title is packed with 50 different characters. Besides fairies, there are princesses, cute food characters, magic animals, and all sorts of whimsical, smiley little creatures that live somewhere between dreams and cartoons.

Each one follows the same six-step format, and every single one is designed with young, beginner artists in mind.

I’ve heard from so many parents who say this book is a go-to favorite in their house. And I think a big reason for that is because it teaches more than how to draw a fairy—it teaches kids to slow down, follow instructions, and see progress unfold right in front of them. And once they realize they can draw a fairy, they start believing they can draw anything.

Why Learning How to Draw A Fairy Is a Great First Step

There’s something really special about the fairy as a subject. It’s not just wings and sparkles—it’s imagination. When a kid sits down to learn how to draw a fairy, they’re creating a character who doesn’t exist in the real world. That means they get to decide everything about her. What kind of wings? What kind of shoes? Does she carry a wand or ride a butterfly?

Get The Book!

That freedom makes drawing a fairy a great creative exercise. It’s structured—but flexible. And in my books, that’s exactly the kind of experience I try to give young artists.

Free Activity Page (save and print):

What Makes These Books Different

I’ve been creating kids’ drawing books for years now—over 70 titles and counting. And the one thing I always come back to is this: make drawing fun.

When kids open one of my books, they’re not facing a blank, intimidating page. They’re jumping into a structured creative experience with clear guidance and plenty of personality. They’re not just learning how to draw a fairy—they’re learning how to take an idea and make it real.

Here’s what I always include:

  • Original artwork – I hand-draw every character, so you’re getting a consistent, kid-friendly style across the board.
  • Beginner-friendly design – Simple, clear steps that don’t assume any prior drawing experience.
  • Characters kids love – Cute, funny, magical, and imaginative creatures that spark creative thinking.
  • Encouragement through success – When a kid completes a drawing and it actually looks like the example, they feel proud. That feeling builds momentum.

And I think it’s that last point that really sticks with families. Confidence is everything. When a child learns how to draw a fairy and it looks good, they don’t just want to draw another fairy—they want to draw everything.

A Perfect Fit For Creative Kids

Whether your kid is already sketching all day or just picking up a pencil for the first time, this book meets them where they are.

How to Draw: Fairies, Princesses, and Other Cute Stuff is a mix of magical characters that offer something for everyone. If they love nature, there are flower fairies. If they’re into fantasy, there are wands and stars and enchanted crowns. If they’re into silly stuff, some of the characters have animal sidekicks or float around with balloons.

And if their main goal is to learn how to draw a fairy, this book has everything they need to get started and grow from there.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been looking for a way to help your child explore their creativity and build confidence, this book is a great place to start. With 50 cute characters and easy-to-follow instructions, How to Draw: Fairies, Princesses, and Other Cute Stuff gives kids the tools to succeed, one drawing at a time.

And the free page we’re sharing today? It’s a perfect introduction. Six steps. One pencil. And a brand new fairy ready to come to life.

I hope you and your kids enjoy learning how to draw a fairy as much as I enjoyed creating her.

If you’ve been looking for a creative and screen-free way to keep your kids entertained, Mermaids, Unicorns, and Other Cute Stuff: Coloring and Activity Book might be exactly what you need. With a fun variety of activities and hand-drawn illustrations by yours truly, this book is packed with characters and puzzles that spark imagination. Today, I’m sharing a freebie from the book—a Mermaid Maze where a mermaid is trying to find her way back to her mer-puppy. It’s just one example of the kinds of activities your kids will find inside, and I think they’ll love it.

As always, everything inside this book was created by hand. Every mermaid, unicorn, food character, and magical creature is something I sketched out, refined, and turned into a finished illustration—just like all my other books. If you’re new here, I’m Kevin Coulston, a cartoonist and illustrator who’s spent the last several years creating art activity books for kids. If you’re not familiar with my work, this is a great entry point.

What’s Inside the Book

This activity book is a little different from my step-by-step drawing titles, but just like those books, the focus is still on sparking creativity. Mermaids, Unicorns, and Other Cute Stuff: Coloring and Activity Book combines coloring pages with games and puzzles, all filled with cute and whimsical themes that are perfect for younger kids. The full list of activities includes:

  • Coloring Pages – Featuring cute mermaids, unicorns, magical pets, food with faces, and other adorable characters.
  • Mazes – Like the Mermaid Maze included in this post, these puzzles are simple but engaging and full of character.
  • Tic-Tac-Toe Pages – Play against a friend or decorate the board with your own creative twist.
  • Word Searches – Easy enough for early readers but still fun for older kids too.
  • Spot the Difference – Train your eye for detail while exploring cute scenes.

All of these were made with a similar purpose: to help your kids slow down, focus, and have fun while creating something. There’s something satisfying about coloring or solving a puzzle on paper, and it’s a great way to encourage a bit of quiet creativity without a screen in sight.

About the Mermaid Maze

Let’s talk about the free page I’m sharing today. The Mermaid Maze has one goal: help the mermaid reunite with her mer-puppy. Like all the puzzles in this book, it’s meant to be fun and accessible without being overly simple. There are a few turns and choices to make, so kids will get a light challenge without feeling overwhelmed. And of course, everything is illustrated by hand, from the twisting maze path to the characters themselves. You won’t find any clip art here.

This particular maze is a great example of how the book mixes activity and story. There’s no dialogue or text-heavy explanation, but the idea is still clear: there’s a mission, a path, and a goal. That small sense of story can make a big difference in how much kids engage with a puzzle.

If your child enjoys this maze, there’s more where that came from inside the book—plus plenty of coloring opportunities on every page.

Why I Made This Book

A lot of my books are focused on teaching kids how to draw, and while I still love that format, I also wanted to make something a little more open-ended. Not every kid is going to want to follow step-by-step instructions, and that’s fine. Some kids just want to color and explore. Others love puzzles. Some just want to stare at cute characters and create their own stories. That’s who this book is for.

It’s meant to be a relaxing activity book your kids can keep coming back to. Whether they color just one page or do all the puzzles in a row, they’re spending time in a creative space—and that’s always the goal for me when I make these.

Designed for All Skill Levels

This book isn’t age-locked. While it’s definitely designed with kids in mind, there’s nothing stopping older siblings (or parents, for that matter) from picking up a crayon or pen and joining in. The Mermaid Maze, for example, has been a hit with younger and older kids during testing. Some like to race through it, others like to decorate the path with colors, patterns, and glitter gel pens. I love seeing how different people approach the same activity in totally unique ways.

The Art Behind the Pages

Every single page of this book—like all my others—is drawn by hand. I spend a lot of time developing the look and personality of each character before they go to print. Whether it’s a sleepy narwhal, a cupcake with a crown, or a mermaid riding a unicycle (yes, that exists), each one starts as a pencil sketch. I clean them up, ink them, and then design the layout for the coloring or activity page they’ll live on.

It’s a time-intensive process, but I think it makes a difference. The characters feel more personal, and the pages have a consistency you don’t get from mixed-style stock art. More importantly, kids notice. They can tell when something’s been made with care.

Screen-Free Fun That Actually Feels Fun

There’s a lot of noise out there when it comes to what’s “good” for kids, especially when it comes to screen time. I’m not here to tell you to toss your tablet or cancel your streaming service, but I am here to offer an alternative that’s quiet, creative, and hands-on.

Activity books like this one are great for car rides, waiting rooms, rainy days, or just afternoon downtime. They give kids a chance to work independently or with a friend and to make something they can hold in their hands when they’re done.

Who This Book Is For

  • Kids who love cute characters
  • Young artists and puzzlers
  • Parents looking for quiet time activities
  • Teachers who need quick and engaging creative work
  • Gift-givers looking for something a little different

And of course, if your child likes mermaids, unicorns, magical pets, or smiley food characters, this one’s an easy pick.

Final Thoughts

Whether your child is solving a Mermaid Maze, coloring in a dancing donut, or searching for hidden words among smiling sea creatures, they’re diving into a world built to inspire imagination. That’s what I aim for in every book I make—whether it’s a drawing guide or an activity book like this one.

I hope you and your kids enjoy exploring this book as much as I enjoyed creating it. And if they like this one, there’s plenty more to discover across my different series. Thanks for reading, and happy coloring!

If you’ve ever wondered how to draw a giraffe with a unicorn horn, today’s your lucky day. This delightfully unusual combination of tall and graceful meets sparkly and magical is just one of many fun hybrid animals you’ll find inside my book Draw by Grid: Unicorn Animals. And to give you a taste of what it’s like, I’m sharing a freebie page straight from the book — a complete grid drawing guide featuring a unicorn giraffe!

It’s part giraffe, part unicorn, and all fun to draw. Whether your child loves fantasy creatures, jungle animals, or just quirky art projects, this drawing is a fantastic way to spark creativity and develop skills at the same time.

In this post, I’ll talk more about the freebie page, the benefits of grid drawing, and how Draw by Grid: Unicorn Animals fits into my wider collection of drawing books for kids. If you’re here to find the best way to help a young artist learn how to draw a giraffe with a unicorn horn, you’re in the right place.

Draw by Grid: Unicorn Animals

What’s So Fun About a Giraffe with a Unicorn Horn?

Let’s start with the obvious — giraffes and unicorns aren’t animals you typically see combined, but that’s exactly why this idea works. Kids love drawing unique creatures. And when you blend something majestic like a unicorn with something goofy and elegant like a giraffe, you get a character that’s both magical and memorable.

The free page shows the drawing broken into a simple grid system. That makes it easier to follow and helps kids build the image one piece at a time. By the end, they’ll have a completed drawing of a giraffe with a unicorn horn — and the confidence to draw more from the book.

Why Grid Drawing Works

Grid drawing is a great way to teach art without overwhelming beginners. It breaks the process down into smaller, more manageable steps. Each square of the grid contains a small part of the drawing, which means kids aren’t guessing where to start or what to do next.

This approach:

  • Builds spatial awareness
  • Encourages focus and patience
  • Helps develop hand-eye coordination
  • Makes it easier to replicate complex shapes
  • Gives kids a “framework” for drawing confidently

By learning how to draw a giraffe with a unicorn horn using this method, kids get more than just a fun picture — they gain experience that carries over into all their future drawing projects.

About the Book: Draw by Grid: Unicorn Animals

Draw by Grid: Unicorn Animals features 50 unique hybrid characters that combine real-world animals with the magical charm of unicorns. Some are cute, some are funny, and some are downright strange — and that’s exactly the point. The goal is to give kids the freedom to imagine and draw creatures that don’t exist anywhere else.

Each page in the book uses the same easy-to-follow grid method, which means once your child completes the giraffe page, they’ll know exactly how to approach the others. They’ll get better with each drawing and discover how fun it is to create these magical creatures.

Inside you’ll find things like:

  • Unicorn versions of animals from the jungle, the forest, the sea, and even the farm
  • Silly mashups that encourage kids to stretch their imagination
  • A consistent drawing format that helps build confidence with every page
  • Black-and-white pages perfect for coloring after drawing

And of course, every page brings a new opportunity to practice how to draw, shade, and color — all within a structured but flexible format.

The Draw by Grid Series: An Overview

This book is part of my larger “Draw by Grid” series. If you’ve never used one of these books before, the format is super simple:

  1. Each drawing is presented inside a grid.
  2. Kids copy what they see in each box into the matching square on the blank grid.
  3. As they move from box to box, the full image comes together — like solving a creative puzzle.

The books are designed for kids ages 6 and up, but they’re also a great entry point for beginners of any age. Whether your child is drawing for the first time or looking for a new challenge, this series offers an approachable path to learning.

Draw by Grid books are especially helpful for kids who want to draw but aren’t quite ready for “freehand” sketching. It builds their skills naturally while giving them cool and creative characters to work on.

Creative Skills Kids Will Practice

When kids learn how to draw a giraffe with a unicorn horn, they’re doing more than just making a fun picture. They’re also building:

  • Visual observation: Matching shapes and proportions from one grid to another
  • Fine motor control: Making deliberate marks with a pencil or pen
  • Problem solving: Figuring out how lines and shapes come together
  • Patience: Sticking with a multi-step project from start to finish
  • Creativity: Adding their own colors or features once the drawing is done

These are the kinds of skills that support not just art, but learning in general.

Ideas for Parents, Teachers, and Caregivers

This unicorn giraffe isn’t just fun to draw — it can be used in a variety of settings:

  • Rainy day activity: Just add pencils and paper
  • Classroom art project: Great for building focus and following steps
  • Homeschool enrichment: Add it to your art or creative writing curriculum
  • Birthday party fun: Print out multiple pages for a themed drawing session
  • Screen-free time: Keeps kids busy in a productive way

And once kids finish the unicorn giraffe, you can invite them to imagine what other animals might look better with a unicorn horn. A unicorn elephant? A unicorn alligator? The ideas are endless.

If you’re looking for an easy and fun way to teach kids how to draw a baby flamingo, you’re in the right place.

This post features a brand-new video drawing tutorial straight from the pages of my book Trace Then Color: Baby Animals. The featured character today is a baby flamingo—fluffy, round, with oversized eyes and a cheerful little wobble. It’s one of the cutest animals in the book, and a great starting point for anyone learning how to draw a baby flamingo.

In the free video tutorial below, I walk you through every step needed to learn how to draw a baby flamingo just like the one in the book. No guesswork, no complicated lines—just simple shapes, clear instructions, and fun details.

This style is approachable for kids as young as five but also enjoyable for anyone looking to relax and sketch something sweet and silly. The drawing starts with basic shapes, builds up with gentle curves, and ends with light shading and color. By the end, you’ll know how to draw a baby flamingo with confidence—and you’ll have a finished character that feels full of personality.

About the Book: Trace Then Color: Baby Animals

This drawing comes from my book Trace Then Color: Baby Animals, which is part of the larger Trace Then Color series. The book features 30+ baby animal characters in a variety of adorable poses—from a sleepy koala to a playful dolphin, a giggling panda, a shy alligator, a fluffy llama (also featured in a previous freebie), and now, our spotlight character: a baby flamingo.

Each page is designed to build drawing confidence. Kids trace the outlines of the character, then color it in however they like. It’s a gentle, low-pressure way to help young artists improve control, recognize shapes, and have fun creating something they’re proud of.

And for those specifically looking to learn how to draw a baby flamingo, this book gives them the perfect opportunity to do so in a way that feels achievable and fun.

Why Tracing Works

The Trace Then Color method is about more than just filling in lines. It’s a smart, structured way to practice drawing fundamentals like:

  • Line control
  • Shape recognition
  • Fine motor skills
  • Focus and concentration

Tracing allows kids to follow a clear path and build up their muscle memory as they go. They’re not just coloring—they’re learning how shapes come together to form characters.

So when your child wants to know how to draw a baby flamingo, giving them a page from this book lets them start with a strong foundation. They can trace the entire flamingo, color it in, then maybe even try drawing it freehand later on.

What Makes Trace Then Color: Baby Animals Different?

There are plenty of tracing books out there, but this one focuses specifically on cute, cartoon-style baby animals designed to appeal to younger kids and early learners. The expressions are friendly, the lines are bold and clean, and each character has its own little personality.

If your child wants to learn how to draw a baby flamingo, this book provides a ready-made guide—and once they’re finished, they can move on to other favorites like a baby cat, dog, dolphin, or giraffe. There’s always another adorable animal waiting on the next page.

About the Trace Then Color Series

The Trace Then Color series is one of my favorite formats to create. It’s designed for young artists who are still building confidence and coordination but who also want to feel like they’re really drawing.

Each one focuses on a different theme, but they all follow the same simple formula: trace the character, color it in, and enjoy the process.

Books like Trace Then Color: Baby Animals are especially great for ages 4–8, but older kids (and even adults) can enjoy them too. Whether your child is asking how to draw a baby flamingo or just wants a relaxing, creative activity, this series is a solid choice.

Creative Benefits for Kids

Beyond just teaching your child how to draw a baby flamingo, books like this support:

  • Creativity: Kids can customize each character with their own colors and patterns.
  • Problem-solving: Figuring out where each line goes is a great way to develop critical thinking.
  • Confidence: Finishing a drawing feels good. Tracing lets kids succeed right away.

These books are structured but still open-ended. That’s what makes them work so well in both home and classroom settings.

A Gift That Keeps on Giving

What’s great about gifting activity books is that they’re not just for one-day fun. Kids return to them again and again, filling pages with their artwork, solving puzzles, and tracing their way through different characters.

Unlike toys that get lost in a pile or candy that disappears within minutes, an activity book sticks around. It becomes part of a child’s creative journey—and for some, it may even spark a new hobby or skill.

Drawing, tracing, coloring, and following step-by-step prompts are more than just fun—they also help build:

  • Fine Motor Skills
  • Focus and Concentration
  • Hand-Eye Coordination
  • Confidence and Patience
  • Early Artistic and Writing Skills

That’s what makes these books such a thoughtful and meaningful gift for the season.

Perfect for All Ages

Another reason activity books make such perfect Easter gifts is their flexibility. Whether you’re shopping for a 4-year-old just learning to hold a crayon or a 9-year-old who’s getting more confident with their drawing skills, you’ll find age-appropriate content in the collection.

And if you’ve got multiple children to shop for? Pick a few different themes and let each kid unwrap something that feels uniquely “them.” No fights, no duplicates, and everyone’s happy!

Great for Easter Gatherings, Too

Hosting an Easter brunch, playdate, or egg hunt? Activity books make excellent party favors or quiet-time options during the day’s events. Set out a creative corner with crayons and a few sample pages to give kids something fun to do between activities.

They’re also great for gifting to nieces, nephews, grandkids, or friends’ children—especially if you’re looking for something a little more personal than candy.

Easy to Pair With Other Goodies

Want to build a balanced Easter basket that still feels festive and fun? Activity books are easy to pair with:

  • Mini coloring supplies (crayon packs, colored pencils)
  • Stickers
  • Spring-themed toys or figurines
  • Bunny ears or costume accessories
  • Plush toys
  • Healthy snacks

It’s a thoughtful way to add variety without overloading the sweets—and it ensures that your Easter surprise is as practical as it is adorable.
